HOW TO TAKE CARE OF VAGINAL HEALTH IN OLD AGE?

You've likely noticed some of the common drawbacks of aging—wrinkles, a decreased metabolism, and memory loss. What about the vaginal health? Does your vagina also start getting old and age? In fact, there are a whole host of changes that occur down there, starting from your 40s. While most of the aging-related differences you'll notice in your lady parts, like an increase in dryness and yeast infections, are not just simply annoying but serious also.

As you age, your skin loses elasticity, and wrinkles become more pronounced. Something similar happens to your vagina. Estrogen helps to keep skin plump and more elastic.

VAGINAL DRYNESS, the most common problem. The drop in estrogen levels reduces the amount of moisture in vagina, making it thinner and less elastic. This is called VAGINAL ATROPHY. Although this dryness might appear like a minor concern, it can severely impact a woman’s sex life.

Kegel exercises that simulates and invigorates the area might help at times. The prevention trick for it is by keeping the vaginal tissue moist. A doctor might even recommend a vaginal moisturizer or prescribe a topical or oral estrogen.

VAGINAL ITCHING occurs due to various infections in the vagina. Most older women are affected by this problem because the increase in age makes the body more prone to different infections. Also, the vaginas of older women are less acidic than that of younger ones which make them more vulnerable to infections that lead to vaginal itching.

VAGINAL PAIN. As a woman ages, the blood circulation in the body also slows down, because of which the vulva does not receive sufficient blood, causing Vaginal Pain. This results in slower recovery time when there is damage in any part of the body.à The preventive trick here is by exercising regularly to help keep your body fit and free from all sorts of problems.

LEAKAGE, another major problem for elderly women. Untreated leakage problem can lead to rashes and bed sores. Elderly pads / adult diapers are a welcome relief in this situation.

If you’ve ever had a URINARY TRACT INFECTION (UTI), you know how painful and frustrating they can be, especially if they keep coming back.

To prevent it, some of the practical measures can be:

  1. Drink plenty of water, and relieve yourself often. The simplest way to prevent a UTI is to flush bacteria out of the bladder and urinary tract before it can set in. If you’re well-hydrated, it will be tough to go too long without urinating.

  2. Wipe from front to back. Bacteria tend to hang around the anus. If you wipe from front to back, especially after a bowel movement, they're less likely to make it to the urethra

  3. Steer clear of irritating feminine products. Skip douches, deodorant sprays, scented powders, and other potentially irritating feminine products.

A thorough knowledge and continuous monitoring of your grandmother’s physical condition with loads of love and respect can help her to lead a better life!
